FAQs
What does 'claiming expenses' mean?
Due to the government’s recent spending review we have had to review our volunteer expenses policy. We may be able to pay back your expenses and will review each case individually. If you are from a low income household or are worried this will affect you being able to volunteer with us, get in touch and we will see what we can do to help. How can I claim for childcare?
This works in the same way as expenses. If you have employed a childminder so you can take part in a moving Voices project, firstly, make sure they are registered (we can't pay for unregistered childminders), then pay them out of your own money but make sure you get a receipt. Give that receipt to Catherine Gill and South East Dance will send you a cheque for that amount.
I'm over 25 - can I take part?
Unfortunately the moving Voices project is only open to 16 - 25 years olds. If you are interested in getting involved in dance projects, have a look at the South East Dance FAQs, there are details of regional and national groups and organisations who may offer volunteering opportunities. If you are looking for employment in the arts, keep an eye on the South East Dance vacancies page. Arts Jobs, coordinated by the Arts Council, is also a fantastic source of information. You can find them here.
I'm not a dancer - is this for me?
Absolutely! There are so many different opportunities available through the project, including web design, photography, leadership training etc - tell us your ideas and we'll try to make it happen.
I am a dancer - what can I do?
Tell us what you'd like to do and we'll see if we can make it happen. Previous volunteers have run workshops, received training to lead groups, shadowed more experienced dancers. Let us know your ideas...
What will I get out of this?
The range of skills you can acquire will look great on your CV. You can work towards nationally recognised qualifications including an Arts Award. (For more information about Arts Award please visit www.artsaward.org.uk) You can also gain a Dance Leadership Award, which is accredited by Surrey University as well as V50 and VImpact certificates which recognise when you have volunteered 50 - 100 hours for your community.
Is there a dress code to work in the office?
If you are volunteering in the South East Dance offices, there is a pretty relaxed dress code. People wear casual clothes to work such as jeans and T shirts; this is quite unusual for an office environment but we find it works for us!
Do I have to live in Brighton to get involved?
No! The project is for people who live anywhere within the nine regions in the South East. These areas are: Brighton and Hove, East Sussex, West Sussex, Hampshire, Surrey, Kent, Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire.
How much or how little time do I have to commit?
It's up to you. From being a full-time volunteer for a 13 week office placement to submitting a photograph for our website, you can give as much or as little time as you like to the project.
I'm interested- what now?
Great! To find out more, get in touch with the moving Voices Coordinator, Catherine Gill. Her office telephone number is 01273 645262. She's in and out of the office a lot so you can always ring her mobile: 07977 203285 or e-mail her: catherine.gill@southeastdance.org.uk We look forward to meeting you!
